My first wilderness trip was down the MacKenzie River while I was still in utero, which I am told explains many things...
I have had a lifelong passion for the Canadian countryside. I spent my childhood camping, canoeing, and generally exploring the land around my rural Saskatchewan home. Those were the days when you fell off the face of the earth when you went into the bush, and I became enthralled with the independence and self reliance of it all (I partially blame Farley Mowat's book Lost in the Barrens for this). Older, wiser, and carrying a satellite communicator, I still love the anticipation of leaving the highway behind to explore the backcountry.
After growing up in rural Saskatchewan and adventuring in western Canada, I moved to rural eastern Ontario. At this point I began a series of more remote adventures ranging from coast to coast to coast. I have been to all of the territories and provinces, and done extended paddling trips all across the country. However, even with those amazing experiences, I still feel the magic of just getting out locally camping, paddling, snowshoeing, photographing, or just walking the dog in the forest.
Photography is the other passion that has carried over from childhood. I started with my mother's old box camera, taking blurry black and whites as a preteen. By the time I started more significant trips I had moved to an SLR and had just enough knowledge to occasionally get decent pictures. All of which has left me with a reasonable photographic record of my early outings and helped prevent my memories from deviating too far from reality. Over the years photography has grown from being a secondary exercise during other activities to a primary reason for getting outdoors, especially as a motivator to get out on those cold mornings before dawn - painful but beautiful once you are there!
After travelling quite extensively over the years for work, I have come to appreciate that there are very few other places in the world that have the range of outdoor opportunities that we enjoy here in Canada. I hope that this website can help encourage you to get out and experience more of this spectacular country!
