My experience in the southern part of this region is mostly downhill ski trips and cycling trips that were not backcountry experiences (but great just the same). However I have done some hiking daytrips in the area, and while living briefly in Calgary did some paddling daytrips. This is another region that most will be somewhat familiar with even if you have never been. The weather is unpredictable, the scenery is spectacular, and the backcountry is often accessible by road.
Access to the northern portion of the region is another story. Here road access is limited and you are often looking at fly-in access or very long trips (or both). You will often be isolated and need to be self-reliant, but the rewards are huge. I have been to this area three times on paddling trips; the Mountain River (NT), the Nahanni River (NT), and the Bonnet Plume River (YT). The rivers require a level of whitewater experience, but unlike many of the other zones I have never had bug problems on these trips!
