Taiga Photos
Apparently in other parts of the world Taiga and Boreal Forest are interchangeable, but in North America the Taiga refers to the transition zone between robust forest and arctic tundra. This is another region that is typically very hard to access, but one that will provide a true wilderness experience if you do. It is a land of (small) trees, rocks and water where it is generally difficult to explore on land. Historically waterways have been the highways of the region, and that remains true today for backcountry exploration. I have done three trips that either began or ended in the Taiga: the Coppermine River (NT/NU), the Kazan River (NT/NU), and the Missinaibi River (ON). Though these rivers require experience with wilderness travel, rapids can typically be bypassed on portages so there is not a requirement for significant whitewater paddling skills.
