Boreal Photos
This is the region I expect most people associate with "northern Canada". It is another vast region, but in this case is often reasonably accessible by road while still often providing a wilderness experience. Like the Taiga it is a region made to be explored by water, though some areas do have maintained hiking trails. Where there are no trails travel overland is typically difficult as forests are dense and often fragmented by the same waterways that make much of it a paddling paradise.
When I was a child our family spent many summer vacations camping in the boreal forests of central Saskatchewan, and as a young adult my first canoe tripping experiences were short trips in central and northern Saskatchewan. As an adult I have continued to visit the boreal forest on shorter canoe or camping trips, and have also done a number of more extended trips including the Clearwater River (SK/AB), Fond du Lac River (SK), Churchill River (SK), Bloodvein River (ON/MB), Missinaibi River (ON), La Verendrye Reserve (QC), and Newfoundland South Coast (NL).
