Prairie Photos
I have always been attracted to the open spaces and endless skies of the prairies. I grew up cycling the gravel back roads in Saskatchewan to explore the potholes and poplar bluffs near our rural home, and still get out to enjoy the countryside and wildlife whenever I am back. For backcountry vacations I have visited Grasslands National Park (SK) and Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park (SK/AB).
It may just be because I grew up there, but I feel the prairie is vastly underrated as a place to enjoy the outdoors. Though the bulk of it has been converted to farmland and is highly accessible by road, there are still a few places like Grasslands and Cypress Hills parks that retain large expanses of native prairie and where you can roam at will! Even the farmed areas are very sparsely populated and carpeted with potholes, sloughs, ravines and river valleys that remain untamed and full of life. There is a reason the prairie pothole region is nicknamed the duck factory, and places like Quill Lakes, Last Mountain Lake, and Old Wives Lake among many others are major pitstops for many species that use the central migratory bird flyway. The prairie is an easily accessible region that you can explore without specialized equipment or skills, and is well worth adding to a bucket list!
